Psychiatric Evaluation & Diagnosis

Around 50 percent of Americans experience a mental health condition at some point during their lives. An initial psychiatric evaluation is a critical part of getting an accurate diagnosis and the treatment you need. At Live Well Psychiatry in Meridian, Idaho, our team of mental health experts offers extensive initial consultations, including research-level surveys to help them get your diagnosis right the first time. To schedule an evaluation, call Live Well Psychiatry.

What happens during an initial psychiatric evaluation?

At Live Well Psychiatry, we believe in providing accurate diagnoses to our patients as the foundation for effective treatment. Our diagnostic process uses a standardized interview based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), which is the gold standard for psychiatric diagnosis.

At the first appointment, we conduct a comprehensive interview, which collects lifetime symptoms from the patient. This interview is designed to establish accurate psychiatric diagnoses, including depression, anxiety disorders, ADHD, and mania, among others. The diagnoses are clearly explained to the patient and are the foundation for future treatment based on personal experience and data.

Our diagnostic interview is used by all providers in our clinic and is applied to every patient we treat. This provides a standard of practice for all providers, ensuring that every patient receives the same rigorous and consistent approach to diagnosis and treatment.

At Live Well Psychiatry, we're committed to providing the best possible care to our patients, and our diagnostic process is just one way we do that. We believe that an accurate diagnosis is the foundation for effective treatment and we're proud to offer this service to our patients.

Prior to you appointment, please fill out the new patient paperwork and submit them to the office. In addition to standard paperwork, the team at Live Well Psychiatry asks you to complete same-day research-level evaluation surveys. These surveys will be sent to you via text message or email. You can also find them on the patient portal. Please make sure you fill out the surveys for the day at least 30 minutes prior to the start time of your appointment.

These scientific questionnaires are different from the downloadable forms and help your provider get a full picture of your mental, emotional, and physical health.

When your paperwork is complete, you meet with your provider for approximately an hour. Your provider reviews your forms and asks many questions to get to know you and assess your condition.

This appointment might feel like an interview. Be honest and frank with your provider. They need to understand precisely how you’re feeling and what you are thinking. Live Well Psychiatry is also a safe, confidential, judgment-free zone.

At the end of your first appointment, your provider gives you a diagnosis and discusses your treatment options. They can also direct you to resources to learn more about your condition and health.

If you’re concerned about your mental health, call Live Well Psychiatry for your initial psychiatric evaluation today.

At Live Well Psychiatry in Meridian, Idaho, the team of mental health experts offers telemedicine services for convenient, confidential psychiatric care. If you would like to schedule a telemedicine appointment, call the practice today.

What is telemedicine?

At Live Well Psychiatry, telemedicine appointments are similar to office visits, but you don’t have to come into the office. You can attend telemedicine appointments from your home, office, or any other private place where you have a reliable internet connection.

The team provides all of the necessary paperwork and assessments on the patient portal. You can complete the paperwork before your appointment, and your provider can assess your symptoms and health with the same information you would provide in the office. They can assess your symptoms, recommend treatments, and send prescriptions to your pharmacy.

The team uses Zoom and recommends that you download the app before your appointment. They provide a link for you to join your private meeting.

What are the benefits of telemedicine?

Telemedicine offers several patient benefits. The team wants to make expert psychiatric care as convenient and as easy as possible for you and your family.

Cost

By using telemedicine, you don’t have to pay for gas, parking, or other transportation costs. Since you don’t have to leave home or work to attend your appointment, you don’t need to pay for an additional child or eldercare.

Time

You don’t need to take time off work or worry about spending time in the waiting room when you opt for telemedicine. You can schedule your appointment during a break in your working day or when you know you will have time to talk to your provider.

Distance

Telemedicine eliminates geographic factors that can prevent you from making or getting to your appointments. Whether you live outside of the city limits or work on the other side of town, you can attend your consultation from anywhere.

TMS

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an innovative treatment for treatment-resistant depression and/or OCD. The team of mental health experts at Live Well Psychiatry in Meridian, Idaho, has trained with internationally-leading researchers to offer two FDA-approved TMS protocols using state-of-the-art MagVenture® TMS equipment. Call Live Well Psychiatry today to find out if TMS is right for you.

What is TMS?

TMS is an innovative, FDA approved, therapeutic option for patients with treatment-resistant depression and/or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Treatment-resistant depression occurs when you’ve tried at least three types of medication without getting relief from your symptoms. You might also experience intolerable side effects that negate the benefits of your medicine. TMS for OCD can be used along with other therapies.

TMS is a pharmaceutical-free option that uses a magnetic pulse, similar to the magnetic field created in an MRI, to stimulate neurotransmitter activity in your brain. The team at Live Well Psychiatry offers a 10-minute TMS treatment or an express treatment that takes 3-9 minutes.

The team at Live Well Psychiatry personalizes your treatment, using your scores on the depression and anxiety surveys completed before each appointment. The also uses neuro-cardio targeting to hone in on the best place to position the device on your head. The neuro-cardo targeting also makes sure that each treatment is in the exact same place.

Insurance usually covers the 10-minute TMS treatment, and Live Well Psychiatry offers an affordable self-pay option for the express treatments.

Am I a good candidate for TMS?

The team at Live Well Psychiatry uses TMS therapy to help patients with treatment-resistant depression. Generally, if you’re in good health, aside from your depression, you are most likely a candidate for TMS.

You shouldn’t have TMS therapy if you have any metal in your head, such as aneurysm clips, cochlear implants, or brain stimulators. Titanium plates and metal dental fillings are nonmagnetic and safe for TMS treatment.

What happens during a TMS treatment?

During TMS treatment, you sit in a comfortable chair, and your provider positions the TMS device near to your head. They use precise measurements and neuro-cardio targeting to identify the exact location for treatment.

When the equipment is in place, they turn on the TMS machine to create the magnetic pulse. Your treatment can last between 3-20 minutes, depending on your specific needs and the type of TMS therapy your provider recommends.

TMS therapy is painless, although you might feel or hear a tapping sensation. You don’t need any sedatives, so you can drive yourself to and from your appointments. TMS treatments don’t require downtime to recover, and you can return to work and other regular activities immediately.

The team at Live Well Psychiatry recommends that you participate in counseling, behavioral activation, or life-journaling to complement your TMS therapy.

The TMS machine we use, MagVenture, is FDA approval for treating OCD. If you’re interested in TMS therapy, call Live Well Psychiatry today.

Medication Management

Medication is often an essential part of treatment plans for mental health conditions. At Live Well Psychiatry in Meridian, Idaho, the team of mental health professionals completes thorough evaluations to prescribe the right medicine and provide medication management services to monitor your symptoms and help you feel better. Call Live Well Psychiatry today for expert medication management services.

What is medication management?

Medication management is the process of prescribing medicine and monitoring its effectiveness. Many patients need to try several drugs before finding the right prescription to relieve their symptoms.

The team at Live Well Psychiatry uses an extensive assessment to collect the information they need to prescribe the right medication the first time. Their goal is to help you feel better as quickly as possible.

You have your first follow-up medication management appointment approximately a month after you begin to take your medicine. Depending on how you respond, your provider might schedule another appointment a month later, or you may be able to go longer between appointments.

What happens during a medication management appointment?

The team at Live Well Psychiatry uses research-level diagnostic interviews to correctly diagnose your condition, which helps them select and prescribe a medication that is most likely to relieve your symptoms. Fewer than 5% of clinical psychiatrists use these extensive, scientifically-backed surveys.

You complete validated rating scales for depression and anxiety at every appointment, and your answers allow your provider to monitor your response to treatment in more detail and adjust your prescription if necessary.

After you complete these surveys, you meet and review your survey responses with your provider. They ask about your symptoms and overall health and well-being. If you have any concerns about your treatment, make sure to bring them up during these appointments.

How do I know if my medication is working?

The team at Live Well Psychiatry can help you understand the normal range of both positive and negative emotions. They provide treatment to help you reach this range using scientifically-backed rating scales for depression and anxiety. You complete forms at every appointment, and as your ratings decrease, it shows that your treatment is working.

You should also start to feel better. You might find that you don’t lose your temper as quickly or you feel less irritable. Medication needs some time to take effect, so stay patient and be honest with your provider about your experiences.

If you have a mental health condition and are looking for expert, research-based medication management services, call Live Well Psychiatry.
