Meet Steve Barnum, CNP

At Live Well Psychiatry, we are committed to offering patient-centered mental health care, and Steve Barnum, Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), is an integral part of that mission. Steve’s background in nursing and family medicine allows him to offer compassionate, comprehensive care to his patients. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the University of Phoenix and his Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from UCLA. After nearly 2 decades in Occupational Medicine and Urgent Care, Steve realized the importance of mental health care and joined our team to help address the shortage of mental health providers.

Steve believes in empowering his patients through education and personalized care plans. He knows that mental health and physical health are deeply interconnected and that improving one can positively affect the other. His goal is to ensure his patients feel confident, supported, and understood.

 Why Idaho?

Steve loves the natural beauty Idaho has to offer, from its stunning pine forests to its breathtaking mountain vistas. When he’s not working, you’ll likely find Steve exploring these scenic views with his family. “I enjoy traveling with my family, whether it’s right here in Idaho or to beaches and mountains beyond,” he shares. Idaho’s peaceful environment and natural splendor provide the perfect backdrop for his love of gardening, where he spends time working in his yard and flowerbeds.

A Passion for Mental Health Care

Steve’s path to becoming a mental health provider stems from years of experience in the medical field. He started his career as a nurse in hospital and rehab settings, where he saw firsthand how physical and mental health often go hand-in-hand. “I realized how interconnected physical and mental health are and how vital it is to address both,” Steve explains. After over a decade working in Occupational Medicine and Urgent Care, he saw the increasing need for mental health providers. That’s when he decided to join the team at Live Well Psychiatry, dedicated to improving mental health care access.

Words of Encouragement for New Patients

For those feeling nervous about their first appointment, Steve has some comforting words: “It’s completely normal to feel a bit anxious. We’re going to ask questions that might seem repetitive or a little strange, but that’s just part of getting to the root of the problem.” His goal is to make every patient feel comfortable, and he emphasizes that being open and honest during your visit is the key to making real progress. “Smile, relax, and know that we’re here to help you feel better,” he adds.

Steve believes that building strong patient-provider relationships, rooted in trust and open communication, is the foundation for effective mental health care. His approach focuses on understanding each patient’s unique needs and creating personalized care plans that promote long-term wellness.
